G.W. Smith Lumber Co. Newsletter
MAY  2010
Greetings!

After months of inactivity the housing market is finally showing signs of new life.  Local reports from builders and vendors indicate consumers are beginning to spend on home improvement projects from small deck projects to new home starts.  This uptick in business is having a ripple effect in the supply industry.
The law of supply and demand is playing out in lumber and building material prices as well as availability.  Lower lumber prices over the past several years forced many lumber mills, logging operations, and trucking firms out of business.  The ones still standing cut back production and consolidated to stay alive.  A surge in business recently found lumberyards scrambling to fill inventories creating a seller's market not seen since 2005.  Prices are expected to grind higher over the next several weeks but the Spring surge in activity historically peaks around this time.  Please read the Market Update section for further details.  Protect yourself when bidding in this climbing market!
On another note G.W. Smith Lumber Co. is proud to announce that we are now a Certified Green Dealer.  Over the past several months all G.W. Smith salespeople have been through a training and testing program on green building products and practices.  We strive to keep pace with the increasing demand for green building and to be you and your customer's knowledgable, competent partner.  "There is a Material Difference!"

Sincerely,

Mark F. Smith

Market Update:

SYP Lumber
Prices continue their climb as dealers struggle to fill holes in a relatively busy market. Dealers have for the most part enjoyed a busier sales pace in the last couple of weeks depleting an already thin inventory on ground. This has lead to more buying based on needs. Trucking is very challenging, in many cases adding a week to lead times.

SPF Lumber
Mills are showing little sign of weakness even though sales have been slower this week. Lead times are (still) 2 weeks. There seems to be one good day of sales every week or two, which keeps prices firm. Expect this trend to last at least thru mid- June.

OSB Panels
OSB prices continue to move forward. Reduced production and increased demand have driven prices higher and higher. If you are going to be using board in the next 45-90 days you should be anticipating these increases when you bid now.

SYP Plywood
The SYP plywood market continues to climb. Order files, in some cases, reach into May. Planning ahead is the way to go. Trucking is extremely tight right now and rising rates are cutting into profit. No relief is in sight for, at least, the near future.

Roofing
Roofing prices from our suppliers remain stable for the time being.  Once suppliers start to replenish their inventories, expect to see an increase on the retail level as distributors pass on the higher prices they will be paying due to the increase already in place by manufacturers.

Gypsum

Effective with shipments on and after Monday, May 10, 2010, prices will increase for these products:
All SHEETROCKŪ brand gypsum wallboard products will increase 20% per MSF.
All SECUROCKŪ Glass Mat Sheathing and SHEETROCKŪ Glass Mat Liner Panels will increase 20% per MSF.

Fasteners  & Metals
Rises in raw material prices, shipping rates and availablity of transport space, coupled with increased demand are constituting price increases of 15 to possibly, 30 percent over the next two months.  Spencer Steel (Spencer-Union) has announced increases of up to 6% on raw metals and 8% on painted metal products.

Vi nyl
Due to surges in raw-product prices, suppliers have annnounced price increases of 8% or more on future shipments

 To whom it may concern:

G. W. Smith Lumber Company has been a business acquaintance of ours for the past nine years. We have been impressed with not only the quality of their products, but the quality and quantity of time they invest to be sure we get the best product for the job.

We have found them to be fair in pricing of their products, and willing to answer any questions we may have concerning any materials purchased from them. They have always served us with integrity, including treating warranty work with the same importance as new work.

We feel confident that G. W. Smith Lumber Company would be an excellent choice for getting quality service and products for other builders.
