Greetings!
Spring is officially here and
we embrace the warmth and optimism that naturally comes with this
annual rebirth. The next time you visit our showroom you may
notice that we are undergoing some Spring cleaning
ourselves. You will find an expansion
of our kitchen and bath offerings as well as window and
door offerings.
Granite vanity tops are now stock items
in multiple colors and sizes in order to provide you quick job
turnarounds. Aristokraft cabinetry is
available to you in most cases in a one week lead time. As Vetter
Windows and Doors has been absorbed into the family products
of Weathershield, we
have taken on the Weathershield line to complement the Jeld-Wen, Atrium and Lincoln lines that we currently
offer. Neuma fiberglass patio doors offer
complete integrated units with paramount engineering giving you and your
customers great options to choose from. Please visit our
showroom to see these fine products for yourself.
The warmer weather and longer
days seem to uplift our spirits this time of year. Construction
and the economy will improve. Let the uplifting spirit of
Spring take effect on you and pass it on to those around you.
Your business will thank you for it!
Sincerely,
Mark F. Smith G.W.

Market Update:
SYP Lumber Although SYP dimension prices
are falling some, this has not trickled down to many of the MSR markets
yet. I would not expect this trend to be long lived as spring is
beginning to appear in some of the southern areas.
SPF
Lumber The market continues to sky
rocket higher amidst little demand, but even less supply. Mills have a
solid 3-4 week order file and will ride that out before conceding
prices. Weather will be a factor. We are in uncharted waters with a
sneaky strong market, log shortages, lowering chip value and off shore
demand is ongoing and a fundamentally weak housing market that fights
the ability to speculate. Volatility will be the name of the game. OSB Panels Activity in the
OSB market is relatively quiet when compared to plywood markets. Prices
appear to have peaked and are slipping in some regions, notably the Mid
Atlantic and Northeast. Western mills however, are reporting improved
sales. Supply constraints remain a constant concern as an up tick in
demand will quickly overwhelm supply.
SYP Plywood SYP Plywood The SYP plywood
market is on the rise. Mills are on and off the market, raising prices,
& extending order files. Domestic production issues and
interruptions in shipping imports due to the earthquake in Chile are
combining and, therefore, affecting price and availability. This is
especially prevalent on sanded and specialty products.
Roofing The
price increase on roofing products went through in February as planned
and any truck load orders from the manufacturers will be at the new
pricing. Some distributors are holding the old prices as long as
they have pre-increase inventory on hand. However a spurt in
orders that would cause distributors to have to reorder will promt the
passing on of the increase. Quote jobs a 5% to 7% pad.
Gypsum
The
gypsum market will be spiking any day now with increases
forecast of upwards to twenty percent. Keep a close check on market
fluctuations when bidding upcoming jobs.

Meet Your Service Partner
This month's Service
Partner is Eddie Gray. Eddie is a long- time employee of GW Smith,
having begun some thirty-eight years ago at the Bruel Builders location
up on Old Higway 52. Eddie has served in a variety of
positions such as counter sales, contractor sales, and contractor sales
manager.
Eddie is married to
Wilma, and they have four boys and two girls. Most of the
seven children are "out of the nest" and two of them, Daniel and Aaron
have partnered in their own company, Gray & Gray Builders.
Eddie has always been an avid
sports fan and has coached many teams with his primary focus being on
baseball. If it was round and could be thrown, caught, bounced or
batted, he was up for it.
Between his outside sales
postion at GW Smith, sports events, family and rental properties, Eddie
never lights in one place for very long. But he is always ready to
render extravagant service to his customers.
GW Smith would like to salute
Eddie for his long, faithful and excellent service to the company and
our valuable customers.

T E S T I M O N I A L
To
whom it may concern:
G. W.
Smith Lumber Company has been a
business acquaintance of ours for the past nine years. We have been
impressed with not only the quality of their products, but the quality
and quantity of time they invest to be sure we get the best product for
the job.
We have
found them to be fair in pricing of their products, and willing to
answer any questions we may have concerning any materials purchased from
them. They have always served us with integrity, including treating
warranty work with the same importance as new work.
We
feel confident that G. W. Smith Lumber Company would be an excellent
choice for getting quality service and products for other builders.
Sincerely,
Joseph Williams, President LMI Builders, Inc.

GW Smith Lumber would like to wish you

April 5 at 7:00 AM.
A multitude of blossoms sleeps
within the cool, dark earth awaiting the the warmth of the spring and
summer sun, the life-giving rains and the time to every season that will
awaken the slumbering tubers, bulbs and seeds. The tender
shoots struggle to the surface to keep their rendezvous with the sun,
where they will grow, flourish, blossom and fruit so that the cycle may
begin again. In their simple, repetitive cycles they produce peace
and delight by virtue of only being and doing what they were
created for. May we find grace to do the same as
we persevere through these times of change.
To everything there is a season, a time to every purpose
under heaven.
Success is ten percent
inspiration
and ninety percent perspiration.
